How to Winterize Your Vehicle for Ontario Winter

How to Winterize Your Vehicle for Ontario Winter

As the crisp autumn air gives way to winter’s chill, Ontario drivers have to get ready for the challenging road conditions. It’s important that you are prepared for winter driving and that your car is up for the challenge. Here are 12 useful tips to winterize your vehicle for Ontario’s winter wonderland.

Why Winterizing Your Vehicle Matters

Ontario winters can be harsh, with heavy snowfall, icy roads, and temperatures that drop well below freezing. These conditions put extra strain on your vehicle’s systems, potentially leading to failures or malfunctions if your car isn’t properly prepared.

Winterizing your vehicle not only enhances safety but also helps maintain its performance and value. By taking proactive steps, you can prevent costly repairs and ensure your car remains reliable throughout the season. Furthermore, a well-maintained vehicle is more fuel-efficient, which can result in savings at the pump at times when you may be using more fuel to warm up your vehicle.

When to Start Winterizing

The ideal time to start winterizing your vehicle in Ontario is in mid-October, before the first snowfall. However, it’s never too late to take these precautions. Early preparation gives you enough time to address any issues and make necessary appointments with mechanics or tire shops, which can get very busy as winter approaches.

Remember that Ontario’s weather may be unexpected, and an early blizzard might take unprepared drivers by surprise. By winterizing your vehicle early, you’ll have peace of mind that you’re prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws your way.

How to Winterize Your Vehicle for Ontario Winter

Switch to Winter Tires

One of the most crucial steps in winterizing your vehicle is switching to winter tires. All-season tires simply don’t provide adequate traction in snowy and icy conditions. Winter tires are designed with special rubber compounds that remain flexible in cold temperatures and feature deeper treads to grip snow and ice.

The difference in performance between winter tires and all-season tires is significant. Winter tires can improve braking distances on snow and ice by up to 25%, which can be the difference between a safe stop and a collision. They also provide better cornering and overall handling in winter conditions, giving you more control over your vehicle.

In addition, many insurance companies offer discounts for vehicles equipped with winter tires. You may be able to save money on your rates while also enhancing your safety. These discounts can vary from 2% to 5% off your annual premium, resulting in significant long-term savings.

Check and Change Your Oil

Cold temperatures can cause oil to thicken, making it harder for your engine to start and run efficiently. Consider changing to a lower-viscosity oil for the winter, as recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer. This ensures proper lubrication even in freezing temperatures.

Most current vehicles utilize multi-viscosity oils that work well in a variety of temperatures, but you should still consult your owner’s manual for particular winter recommendations. Some manufacturers recommend using 5W-30 or 0W-30 oil in extremely cold temperatures to enable fast cold starts and sufficient engine protection.

When changing your oil, you should also check the other fluids and replace the oil filter. This complete approach to maintenance can help prevent problems in the future and keep your engine operating smoothly all winter long.

Inspect and Replace Wiper Blades

Winter driving demands clear visibility. Replace your regular wiper blades with winter-specific ones designed to handle snow and ice. These blades are typically made of sturdier materials that can withstand harsh winter conditions.

Winter wiper blades sometimes have a rubber boot or shell to keep ice and snow from blocking the blade’s operating parts. This shape allows them to keep in contact with the windshield even in heavy snow, resulting in improved visibility during winter storms.

Consider keeping an extra set of wiper blades in your vehicle. If your blades fail during a snowstorm, having replacements on hand can be a lifesaver. Also, remember to top up your windshield washer fluid with a winter-grade solution that won’t freeze in low temperatures.

Top Up Fluids

Ensure your antifreeze mixture is appropriate for Ontario winter temperatures. Consider using a hydrometer to determine the freezing point of your antifreeze solution. To stay safe in Ontario’s coldest weather, aim for protection down to -35°C or lower. If you’re not sure how to combine antifreeze, many auto parts retailers provide pre-mixed coolant that is ready to use.

For windshield washer fluid, choose a winter-grade product rated for at least -40°C. These solutions often contain additives that help remove ice and frost from your windshield, making it easier to clear your view on frosty mornings.

Battery Check-Up

Cold weather can be tough on car batteries. Cold weather reduces battery capacity, making it difficult for your engine to start. A battery that works properly in the summer may fail when temperatures drop. Have your battery tested to ensure it’s in good condition. If it’s more than three years old, consider replacing it ahead of time to avoid getting trapped in frigid weather. During the battery inspection, make sure the terminals are clean and tight. Corrosion on battery connections might prevent your vehicle from starting, even if the battery is in good condition.

If you frequently take short trips, your battery may not have enough time to fully recharge. Consider using a battery maintainer or trickle charger overnight to keep your battery topped up, especially during extended cold spells.

Replace Cabin Air Filter

A clean cabin air filter ensures your heating system works efficiently, keeping you warm and defrosting windows quickly. Replace it if it’s been more than a year or 25,000 kilometres since the last change.

A clogged cabin air filter can reduce airflow from your vents, making it harder to keep your windshield clear and the cabin warm. It can also force your heating system to work harder, potentially leading to premature wear on the blower motor.

When replacing the filter, consider upgrading to a high-quality or electrostatic filter that can trap smaller particles. This can improve the air quality inside your vehicle, which is especially important during winter when you’re more likely to be driving with the windows closed.

Lubricate Door and Window Seals

To keep your automobile doors from freezing shut, apply silicone-based lubricant to the rubber seals. This easy action can help you avoid being locked out of your automobile on a cold morning.

Pay special attention to the weather stripping around doors and windows. Applying a thin layer of silicone lubricant or rubber conditioner can keep these seals pliable and prevent them from cracking or sticking in freezing temperatures.

Don’t forget to lubricate your door locks as well. A small amount of graphite powder or lock de-icer can prevent your locks from freezing. Keep a tube of lock de-icer in your coat pocket or purse, not in the car, in case you need to thaw a frozen lock.

Switch to Winter Floor Mats

Protect your car’s interior from salt, slush, and moisture by installing winter-specific rubber floor mats. These are easier to clean and will protect your car’s carpeting from water damage.

Winter floor mats often have deep grooves or ridges that trap water, snow, and salt, keeping it away from your vehicle’s floor. This not only protects your carpets but also helps prevent rust and corrosion on the metal floor beneath.

Remember to clean your winter mats regularly. Salt and sand can accumulate quickly, potentially damaging your shoes and tracking into your home. A quick rinse with a hose or power washer can keep your mats in good condition throughout the winter.

Maintain Fuel Levels

Keep your gas tank at least half full throughout the winter. This prevents condensation from forming in the fuel lines, which can freeze and cause blockages. It also provides a margin of safety if you become stranded and need to keep the engine running for warmth.

A fuller tank also adds weight to your vehicle, which can improve traction on slippery roads. If you have a diesel vehicle, consider using a fuel additive designed to prevent gelling in extremely cold temperatures.

In addition to keeping your tank full, it’s a good idea to keep your vehicle’s fuel system clean. Use a fuel system cleaner periodically to remove deposits and ensure optimal engine performance in cold weather.

Test Your Defroster and Heater

Before the cold weather arrives, make sure your car’s defroster and heater are working properly. These systems are crucial for maintaining visibility and comfort during winter driving.

Check all settings of your climate control system, including the air conditioning. While it might seem counterintuitive, your A/C system helps dehumidify the air, which can speed up the defrosting and defogging of your windows.

If you notice any issues with heating or defrosting, have them addressed immediately. A malfunctioning heater core or blower motor can leave you without heat, which is not only uncomfortable but can be dangerous in extreme cold.

Schedule a Professional Tune-Up

Have a professional mechanic perform a winter tune-up. They can check your car’s systems, including:

Brakes

Exhaust system

Heating and defrosting

Belts and hoses

Spark plugs and ignition system

Tire pressure and tread depth

This comprehensive check ensures your vehicle is in top condition to face winter challenges. A professional mechanic can spot potential issues that might not be apparent to the average driver, potentially saving you from a breakdown in harsh weather.

During the tune-up, ask the mechanic to check your car’s four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive system if equipped. These systems can provide extra traction in winter conditions but need to be in good working order to be effective.

From start to finish it was all easy. I emailed, they responded quickly. Then I spoke to someone over the phone to give details about the service I needed. We arranged the service a couple days later. I was given a verbal estimate which ended up being the all-in cost. The day of the service, they were efficient. My car was ready a half hour ahead of schedule because they were able to take me a bit earlier. They also explained to me what was done and everything was on paper. They fixed my tire rod, did an alignment and adjusted my tire pressure. I will definitely be coming here for other car maintenance and service! As a bonus, they gave me a voucher for $30 off my next service of $100+. A nice gesture.
